Shrovetide 1, the ring was nearly for—
gotten in the pancakes2 but was
smuggled in somehow. Desmond got
it.
Another very cold day. Ethel & I did
not relish turning out to go to a
Musical party at Mrs Brereton Barry’s
Nevertheless we enjoyed all right — when
we got there. The music was very good
Mona Moran sang very nicely & we
had several recitations from Ralph Barry.
All patriotic & of the fire‑eating description
Mrs Power O Donohoe was in a milder
vein.
Editorial Notes1Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Tuesday) is the day preceding Ash Wednesday in the Christian Easter calendar where pancakes are traditionally eaten. 2In Ireland objects with symbolic value were baked into the pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. Traditionally the finder of the ring would be the first married.
