{"id":794,"date":"2017-08-22T14:11:17","date_gmt":"2017-08-22T13:11:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dh.tcd.ie\/dh\/?page_id=794"},"modified":"2021-01-04T20:43:13","modified_gmt":"2021-01-04T20:43:13","slug":"digital-scholarship-and-skills-workshop-series","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/dh.tcd.ie\/index.php\/workshops\/past-workshops\/digital-scholarship-and-skills-workshop-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Scholarship and Skills Workshop Series, Michaelmas Term 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Find\u00a0<strong>workshop details<\/strong>\u00a0for the Michaelmas Term 2017 below, and a\u00a0<strong>registration form<\/strong>\u00a0further down:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Workshop One:\u00a0Assessing Digital Scholarship<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instructors: Dr Jennifer Edmond and Siobhan Dunne<br \/>\nDate: 23rd October 2017<br \/>\nTime: 9:30-13:00<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to examine their own scholarly practices and those of others, refining our responses to the fundamental question: &#8220;what is scholarship?&#8221; \u00a0The modes by which the digital disrupts our ability to read certain scholarly objects will be explored in detail, as will the ways in which we can embrace some of the new audiences, values, forms, functions, environments, methods, modes of argumentation, outlets, and validation pathways the digital brings with it.\u00a0 The session will combine lecture and discussion with a hands-on exercise in evaluating diverse scholarly objects, testing our ability to judge their impact and value, and to promote such objects to our peers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants are requested to bring a laptop to the workshop.\u00a0 Handouts for the workshop are available <a href=\"http:\/\/dh.tcd.ie\/dh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Assessing-Digital-Scholarship-Handouts.docx\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Workshop Two:\u00a0Working with Texts in the Digital Age: Digital Scholarly Editing and TEI<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instructors: Dr Michelle Doran and Dr Georgina Nugent Folan<br \/>\n<strong>Venue: Large Conference Room, O&#8217;Reilly Institute, Trinity College<\/strong><br \/>\nDate: 13th November 2017<br \/>\nTime: 9:00-13:00<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the theories, practices and methods for encoding digital text in the Humanities.\u00a0 It provides an introduction to markup languages, XML, the infrastructure of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines, and the encoding of common textual phenomena.\u00a0 Participants will have an opportunity to apply the basic elements of TEI-XML to encode a literary text using the oXygen XML Editor.\u00a0 The workshop combines lectures and discussion with practical hands-on exercises.\u00a0 No previous experience with digital text is assumed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Participants are requested to bring a laptop with the latest version\u00a0of oXygen XML Editor.\u00a0 You can download a free 30 day trial of oXygen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxygenxml.com\/xml_editor\/register.html\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Workshop Three:\u00a0Web Technologies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instructor: Prof. S\u00e9amus Lawless<br \/>\nDate: 4th December 2017<br \/>\nTime: 9:00-13:00<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The aim of this workshop will be to explore the Internet and the Worldwide Web and the foundation technologies that underlie both. The workshop will\u00a0give an introduction to the history of the web, including the emergence of hypertext and web technologies such as HTML and XML.\u00a0Participants will work with HTML and CSS and will learn introductory approaches to web site development. The workshop will be of interest to those\u00a0who are curious about the impact of the web on all aspects of society, with a particular focus on the Humanities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Workshop Four:\u00a0Geographic Information Systems and Historical Mapping<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Instructor: Dr Frank Ludlow<br \/>\nDate: 11th December 2017<br \/>\nTime: 9:00-13:00<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This workshop will begin by briefly illustrating the power of mapping to reveal relationships between seemingly disparate phenomena through space (and time), as well as highlighting common pitfalls and poor practices in mapping, both historical and contemporary. It will also showcase a range of digital mapping platforms \u2013 including a selection from the proliferation of online platforms that host and visualize spatial data of various forms \u2013 before examining the use of two common competing desktop platforms, Google Earth and ESRI\u2019s ArcGIS, and how the two can be made to speak to each other (or interoperate).
