On 2nd October, 2012, Minister Jimmy Deenihan launched the Mary Martin Diary online resource, “A Family At War” . The website, which was devised and developed by students on the TCD MPhil in Digital Humanities and Culture, gives a digital insight of the diaries of a mother in South Dublin in 1916, whose son is off fighting in the Great War.
The diaries are almost perfectly positioned from an historical perspective, being written during a time of huge turmoil and conflict both in mainland Europe, and closer to home in Ireland which was about to witness the Easter Rising.
In preparing this diary for an online digital version, the students had to work in teams and assign tasks based on their strengths. The variety of age ranges and multinational composition of the student cohort on this programme meant that the students were able to work well together, compromising where necessary to gain the best results.
